My First Game & My First Game Jam

Greetings,

My name is Marushia Dark, author, artist, your favorite dark transhumanist, and co-founder of Serket Studios - a little indie game dev company wherein we hope to make amazing games.  This is our first major project together.  I've been a fan of John Stejskal for some time now, learning all his tips and tricks, so when he announced his first game jam, I knew this was the one for us!

It's been a exhausting week, having to work part-time in between our day jobs and sickness, but somehow, we managed to crank out a game that I think you will all enjoy.  Naturally, we had to fend the scope creep off with a rusty dagger attached to a thirty-nine-and-a-half-foot pole.  We had big plans for this, but it was a tough decision having to kill off our darlings and focus on minimum-viable product while still making it something beautiful and worth making, as well as playing.

In the end, we learned a great deal about working together as a team, about our limits, and about our strengths as well, while picking up some more skills and learning things about Unity we'd never imagined before.

Speaking for myself, I know I tend to work better when I have some sort of external motivation - in this case, a harsh deadline and countless gamers, all while having to rise above and out-compete nearly 2000 other participants.  I don't expect we'll win - there were some amazing entries from what I saw on the Discord - but having this under our belts is a huge win and a huge confidence booster.  Not to mention a huge relief now that it's finally over.

To quote Jake Parker: "You need a product, not a project," and up until now, we've just been tinkering (and will continue to tinker).  But this is a product I think we can really be proud of, even if it's not the grand epic we'd envisioned.

"Despise not humble beginnings."

We hope you enjoy the game and, although we are still just finding our footing, we hope you'll give us a follow on our website and our YouTube channel - just search for "Serket Studios."

With that said, I wish you all love, peace, happiness, purpose, and will.
